Palau, officially the Republic of Palau, is an island nation in the Micronesia subregion of Oceania, located in the western Pacific Ocean. It comprises around 340 islands, with a total area of 466 km², making it one of the world’s smallest countries. The most populous island is Koror, and the capital, Ngerulmud, is on Babeldaob, the largest island. Palau shares maritime borders with international waters, the Federated States of Micronesia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.Settled around 3,000 years ago by migrants from Maritime Southeast Asia, Palau was first mapped by Europeans in the 17th century. It was part of the Spanish East Indies (1885), then sold to Germany (1899) after the Spanish-American War. Post-World War I, it was administered by Japan under the South Seas Mandate, and after World War II, it became part of the U.S.-governed Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (1947). Palau gained full sovereignty in 1994 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States, which provides defense and financial aid.Palau is a presidential republic with a bicameral National Congress. Its economy relies on tourism, subsistence agriculture, fishing, and foreign aid, using the U.S. dollar as currency. The population, primarily ethnic Palauans of mixed Micronesian, Melanesian, and Austronesian descent, also includes a small Japanese minority. Official languages are Palauan and English, with Japanese, Sonsorolese, and Tobian as regional languages. If you have specific questions about Palau or want me to dive deeper into any aspect (e.g., history, culture, or current events), let me know! I can also search for real-time information or analyze related content if needed.
